Jake Song: Is your pNIPAAm chain grafted to pEG in a permanent way?
Answer: Yes, pNIPAAm chains are grafted to the pEG in a permanent way. The tetra-pEG is first functionalized with terpyridine and an NHS group, then a click-reaction occurs between the NHS group and the NH2 group of the amine-functionalized pNIPAAm, as visualized in Scheme 1 of the article and here reported for facilitating the reading. We chose a comb-grafting structure for our dual dynamic network to enable potential recyclability of the system, as with a trigger such as pH, it can be reversibly disassembled and reformed. For further details on the reaction mechanism and the reversibility of the system, we suggest to consult our previous publication [1].
