On this day in 1535 the atmospheric phenomenon known as sun dogs appeared in the sky above Stockholm, Sweden. A painter called Urban depicted the event, creating the earliest known recording of the phenomenon. Sun dogs belong to class of halo effects; they are caused by sunlight scattering off ice crystals. Urban's original painting was lost. The oil painting here is a copy made in 1636 by Jacob Elbfas.
