Research could be significantly affected if UK leaves EU Free

20 April 2016

BBC: A large amount of science funding could be lost if the UK votes to withdraw from the European Union (EU), according to a report from the country's House of Lords. The report also says that the country's influence on international research projects would be reduced. Of the funds the UK receives from the EU, nearly one-fifth goes to supporting research, primarily at universities. However, the report notes that EU membership has put into place certain restrictions that have limited some areas of research. Although the UK government could provide replacement funding, that is not guaranteed. The country would also have the option of receiving EU funding as an "associated country" like Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland.
