Hawaii court revokes permit for giant telescope construction Free

3 December 2015
AP News: Protesters in Hawaii scored a victory yesterday when the state Supreme Court rescinded the construction permit issued by the state’s planning board to build one of the largest observatories in the world, the Thirty Meter Telescope, on Mauna Kea. The court said that the permit had been granted before a requested hearing was held to allow opponents to voice their objections. The conflict centers on the fact that Mauna Kea is considered sacred by Native Hawaiians and is a state-designated conservation district. The mountain is one of the best sites for astronomical observations and is already home to more than a dozen observation facilities. Construction has been halted since April, when protesters blocked the road to the telescope site.
