Major Oklahoma oil storage facility threatened by increasing earthquakes Free

15 October 2015
New York Times: Last Saturday a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck in Oklahoma about 5 km northwest of Cushing, where one of the world’s largest oil storage facilities is located. The incident has raised concerns over the growing number of earthquakes in the state, which has been attributed to the injection of fluids into the ground during oil and gas production. Whereas Oklahoma had three earthquakes of magnitude 3 or greater in 2009, last year that number jumped to 585, and this year’s total already exceeds that. Researchers say that more quakes of the size that occurred Saturday may lead to even bigger ones that could significantly damage the Cushing Hub’s pipelines and oil tanks.
