Breakthrough Prizes ceremony mixes science with Hollywood and Silicon Valley Free

10 November 2014
BBC: The Breakthrough Prizes recognize important, primarily recent work in mathematics, the life sciences, and fundamental physics. Backed by investors such as Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Google's Sergey Brin, and Russian entrepreneur Yuri Milner, the prizes award each recipient or group of recipients $3 million. At a ceremony held over the weekend, several new recipients were announced to join those who had been previously selected. Saul Perlmutter, Brian Schmidt, and Adam Riess and their research teams were selected for the physics prize for their discovery that the rate of expansion of the universe is accelerating. The ceremony, held at a retired NASA airfield, was hosted by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane and included Elon Musk, Benedict Cumberbatch, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Redmayne as award presenters.
