BBC: On 6 September just before midnight, people living near the international airport in Managua, Nicaragua, reported hearing a loud bang, feeling a jolt, and smelling something burning. Upon investigation, a crater 12 m wide and 5.5 m deep was discovered in a nearby wooded area. According to Wilfried Strauch, an adviser to the country’s Institute of Earth Studies, it was caused by a meteorite impact. The meteorite may have broken off from 2014 RC, a small near-Earth asteroid that was making a close approach to Earth at that time. No one was hurt, despite the fact that Managua is densely populated.
