Science: Next year the Smithsonian Institution, which comprises a group of museums and research centers administered by the US government, will welcome a new chief executive officer. David Skorton, a physician and the president of Cornell University, will become the 13th secretary when he replaces G. Wayne Clough, who will retire in July 2015. Skorton says he hopes to continue the strategic plan developed by Clough and to work to promote not only the importance of science but also that of the arts and humanities.
