MIT Technology Review: A research team in Switzerland has developed an implant to allow people with artificial hands to feel and manipulate objects. Electrodes are inserted into two of the subject's three major arm nerves; the electrodes receive electrical signals from the fingertips of the artificial hand when it touches something. A Dutch man who lost his left hand in a fireworks accident was part of their study; he said that with the implant he could determine whether an object was hard or soft and how hard he was squeezing it. Now the researchers are working to establish how the device will perform over the long term.
