It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Robert Merle O’Brien, affectionately known as Bob, on 23 January 2024. Born on 10 February 1933 in Eugene, Oregon, to Orel James O’Brien and Mary Frances (Grazer), Bob’s life was an extraordinary journey marked by love, family, and a distinguished career in aerospace.
Bob’s pursuit of knowledge led him to Oregon State College, where he graduated in 1956 with a degree in electrical engineering, showcasing not only academic brilliance but also an abiding passion for his chosen field. Commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the Army Corps of Engineers in 1954, he served with honor at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and Fort Lewis, Washington.
In 1956, Bob embarked on a groundbreaking chapter of his career by joining Boeing. His contributions played a vital role in the success of the Apollo Space Program, leaving an indelible mark on history through his significant involvement in the historic Moon landing and the design of the Lunar Rover. Returning to Renton in 1970, he continued to shape the aerospace industry, focusing on controlling rockets and ordnance.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob, alongside his cherished wife, Mary Ellen, became integral members of Nativity Lutheran Church, where their faith flourished. In retirement, the couple embarked on adventures, exploring the world, and nurturing their shared love for history and nature.
Bob’s zest for life was exemplified in his dedication to sports, where he found joy in coaching his children and grandchildren. His wry sense of humor, as showcased in his rendition of “Pindercella and the Cince,” became a treasured part of his legacy, bringing laughter to those fortunate enough to experience it.
In the last decade, Bob discovered profound joy in the presence of his seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is survived by three of his four children, Pete & Suellen O’Brien, Chuck and Raejeanna O’Brien, and Helen and Dirk Gusse. Bob’s wife, Mary Ellen, and daughter, Susan, preceded him in death.
Robert Merle O’Brien will be remembered not only as an accomplished aerospace engineer but also as a loving husband, dedicated father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished community member. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Nativity Lutheran Church, in loving memory of Robert Merle O’Brien, as a fitting tribute to a life well-lived.
May his legacy continue to shine brightly in the hearts of family and friends, and may he rest in eternal peace.
