BBC: Yesterday SpaceX successfully launched another of its Falcon 9 rockets from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Previous missions carried supplies to the International Space Station; this time the payload was a telecommunications satellite, SES-8, which was placed in a geostationary transfer orbit. SpaceX’s successful launch of the satellite for SES, one of the largest telecommunications satellite operators in the world, represents a milestone for the private California-based space transport company. It’s the first SpaceX mission to go beyond a low Earth orbit. And because of its competitive pricing, SpaceX may be on its way to becoming a key player in the commercial space business.
