UK nuclear waste should be entombed Free

1 August 2006

The Independent: Britain's stockpile of nuclear waste should be buried in deep underground silos says the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management, which is advising the UK Government on what to do with 470,000 cubic metres of nuclear waste. Yesterday, the Royal Society issued a statement which urged to the government to act on the report and not delay plans for dealing with the waste by calling for more scientific research. Said David Wallace, Vice President of the Society:"The nature of scientific knowledge is such that there will always be levels of uncertainty associated with any method of disposing of radioactive waste.... However, there is considerably less uncertainty surrounding burying radioactive waste deep underground in stable geological formations than other options."
