BBC:
The UK needs to recruit more students into science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at the undergraduate and
postgraduate level, according to a recent
report
from the House of Lords Committee on Science and Technology.
Committee members also found that too few students starting
science courses have the necessary math skills and require
remedial work. "The quality of the STEM graduates coming out of
universities does not meet the requirements of industry and in
fact is ultimately not even likely to meet the requirements of
academia," said committee member Lord Willis. The report
concludes that if the country does not improve its educational
system, it could fail to meet its objective of "driving
economic growth through education and hi-tech industries,"
writes Judith Burns for the BBC.
