Science:
Democratic Senator Harry Reid's election victory on Tuesday
will likely allow him to continue his efforts to close down the
proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste disposal site, one of his
big promises to Nevada voters. About $7.7 billion
has
been sunk into the project since Congress selected Yucca
Mountain in 1987 to serve as the nation's nuclear waste
repository. Although Reid has the support of the Obama
administration, opposition may still come from the House of
Representatives—where the Republicans won majority
control.
