Nature:
Nitinol is an alloy of nickel and titanium that "remembers" a
previous shape when heated. Harvard's Robert Wood has
incorporated tiny nitinol-based hinges into flat, pre-sectioned
sheets of a glass fiber composite. When electricity is sent
through the hinges, they warm up and fold the sheet into a
boat, airplane, or other
preprogrammed
origami object.
