News: Google's search engine is a powerful tool for helping
scientists to find academic papers and details of conferences
or identify potential collaborators. And for most researchers
around the world, access to Google—and all its related
products, including the literature search Google
Scholar—is unfettered.Despite some google results being
censored by the Chinese government, the tool is widely used in
China.So
Google's
move to withdraw from the Chinese market after a series of
hacking attempts on its servers, may have an unintended impact
on access to the latest scientific research papers by Chinese
scientists. Alternately, it may strengthen use of more
specialized search engine products produced by scientific
publishers who offer access to China at a free or discounted
rate.
