Anticipations… a continental view of physics and its future

The following is one of three addresses presented under the general theme “Anticipations” during a special session in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the American Institute of Physics. The session was held in New York City's Manhattan Center on February 2nd. The paper by J. A. Stratton begins on page 17, while the third paper, an address by J. R. Oppenheimer, will appear in a subsequent issue.
