The following is an address given by Dr. Condon on September 25, 1951, less than one week before his resignation as director of the National Bureau of Standards became effective. His talk was prepared for delivery at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington.

Adding life to physics
A new day has dawned for physics, says the author of this article, thanks to increased application of physical principles in other scientific and technical fields.
What price scientific books?
Many specialized scientific books that should be published for the general good of science, says the author, cannot be accepted for publication because of high printing costs and their limited audiences. What is needed, he proposes, is a research program carried out by the publishers themselves that will aim at reduced costs and increased speed in printing scientific material.
