Atomic Force Microscopy
Physics Today 43 (10), 23–30 (1990);
https://doi.org/10.1063/1.881238
It is surprisingly easy to make a cantilever with a spring constant weaker than the equivalent spring between atoms, allowing a sharp tip to image both conducting and nonconducting samples at atomic resolution.
New Mechanisms for Laser Cooling
Physics Today 43 (10), 33–40 (1990);
https://doi.org/10.1063/1.881239
Optical pumping and light shifts have unexpectedly conspired to improve laser cooling by orders of magnitude and to produce the lowest kinetic temperatures ever measured.
Studies of the Earth's Deep Interior: Goals and Trends
Physics Today 43 (10), 44–52 (1990);
https://doi.org/10.1063/1.881240
Profound opportunities for understanding the mysteries of the inner Earth lie within reach. But it will take a concerted interdisciplinary research effort to model the total dynamic Earth system.
