The idea of the neutrino
Physics Today 31 (9), 23–28 (1978);
https://doi.org/10.1063/1.2995181
To avoid anomalies of spin and statistics Pauli suggested in 1930 that a neutral particle of small mass might accompany the electron in nuclear beta decay, calling it (until Chadwick's discovery) the neutron.
The Multiple‐Mirror Telescope
Physics Today 31 (9), 30–37 (1978);
https://doi.org/10.1063/1.2995182
A large optical and infrared instrument of novel design nearing completion on Mt Hopkins is the first example of a class that could include telescopes much larger than any now existing.
Thirty years of fluid dynamics
Physics Today 31 (9), 38–46 (1978);
https://doi.org/10.1063/1.2995183
Physicists have made great progress both on fundamental problems, such as turbulence and statistical mechanics, and on many applications, including aerodynamics and the study of geophysical flows.
