When is a particle?
Physics Today 31 (6), 23–32 (1978);
https://doi.org/10.1063/1.2995068
Particle physics, like poetry, no longer hews to its former rigid rules, hence the standard for accepting quarks as elementary constituents is less severe than the neutrino's was in the 1930's—in fact, we may never see a quark.
Ship hydrodynamics
Physics Today 31 (6), 34–42 (1978);
https://doi.org/10.1063/1.2995069
The quest for drag reduction has led to craft that are supported by hydrodynamic forces—hydrofoils—and vehicles that float across land, ice or rough seas on a cushion of compressed air—hovercraft.
