The CS202PF-ULV-STM allows atomic-resolution-level scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite at temperatures below 15 K. The increasing cost of liquid helium has been a limiting factor in low-temperature STM research, and the vibrations associated with standard closed-cycle cryostats were too high for atomic resolution.
