Recognition of the importance of scientific research to the development and maintenance of adequate national defense has affected the over‐all program of the Department of Defense in many ways. One of these has been the establishment of a number of agencies charged with the administration and coordination of research and development in scientific fields of particular interest to the departments in which they are located. Several of these have been described in previous articles in this series.
