Man has been studying the magnetic field of the earth for centuries. The existence of this field of force must be deduced by the use of scientific instruments since, unlike gravity, it is not detectable by our human senses. Measurements of the Earth's magnetic field have been made from deep down in mines up to nearly one hundred miles above the surface.
