Astronomy is, in a fundamental sense, an observational science. Unlike some areas of modern physics, for example, where theoretical developments are often the driving force behind experimental progress, new discoveries in astronomy most often spring from new instrumentation for the observer; theoretical predictions of yet‐to‐be observed phenomena are rare.
