In this special issue we review the new instruments and observational facilities anticipated over the next decade in five major areas of astronomy—high‐energy astrophysics (page 26), radio astronomy (page 36), ultraviolet, optical and infrared astronomy (page 44), planetary sciences (page 54) and solar physics (page 60). These reviews are based on the information contained in the report of the Astronomy Survey Committee, Astronomy and Astrophysics for the 1980s (National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC, 1982). (My article in April, page 46, provides an overview of the Committee's report.)
