The year 1901, just two years after the founding of The American Physical Society, saw the founding of the National Bureau of Standards as the US reference laboratory for measurements and standards. Physics is indispensable to the fulfillment of this function, and the two organizations have enjoyed a close working relationship in these seventy‐five years.
