The Soviet fusion program is a broadly based effort with work in progress at several centers on tokamaks, stellarators and open systems, coupled with a strong background in the theory necessary for an understanding of these machines and their limitations. In addition, some exploratory efforts are being carried out on new ideas and new technologies, such as laser‐induced fusion and pulsed systems. In this article we will briefly survey the present status of each component of this extensive yet well balanced program.
