Many workers in critical phenomena have become interested in the study of tricritical points; such a point is the intersection of three lines of critical points. With the introduction of the concept in 1970 by Robert B. Griffiths (Carnegie Mellon University), tricritical points have been identified in several materials. Griffiths feels that the topic offers the opportunity to study a phenomenon that is basically different and more complicated than ordinary critical points.
