The early 1970's have been important years of change for the physics and astronomy community. Data from the 1973 APS–AIP Register of Physicists and Related Scientists are now being analyzed and will allow us to catch a glimpse of these changes. Our initial analysis of the information reveals that unemployment, which had been dramatically increasing into 1971, has since dropped considerably although not to levels of the mid‐1960's. Despite the tight employment market, salaries have continued to increase with the largest increases noted for physicists employed by the government.
