One of the most exciting topics at the XVII International Conference on High Energy Physics in London in July was the reports from five groups that they had observed direct production of muons and electrons from proton–proton interactions. Except for the results from Serpukhov, which were at lower energy, the experiments all find that the ratio of muons (or electrons) produced to pions produced is a constant, approximately Furthermore, the ratio remains constant over the wide range of transverse momentum studied. The amount of direct lepton production is higher than one might have expected and, in particular, the amount is markedly higher than predictions of the parton model.
