Atomic physicists have been awaiting reliable measurements of the Lamb shift in high‐Z atoms as a sensitive test of quantum electrodynamics. Now a team from Bell Telephone Laboratories reports a value of 780.1±8.0 GHz for carbon, atomic number 6, that agrees with the most recent predictions of QED, 783.7±0.25 GHz.
