SUCCESSFUL RESEARCH leads to discovery; successful teaching shares these discoveries with others. The academic physicist bears a responsibility to both teaching and research. Although the quantities displayed in figure 1 do not precisely measure performance in either area, few will quarrel with the trend their contrast dramatizes: In the last 30 years physics has made spectacular additions to the knowledge of the universe, but a diminishing fraction of the educated population is sharing this knowledge.
