The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics held an International Conference on the Physics of Metals in Amsterdam on July 12–17, 1948, in connection with a meeting of its General Assembly. It was a popular meeting for Americans: thirty out of the 311 physicists in the official list of participants came from the United States, a delegation exceeded only by those from the Netherlands, which naturally had the greatest number, and Great Britain.
