THE LAST DECADE has brought about enormous growth in efforts toward understanding plasmas. This growth has come primarily from two sources: the controlled‐thermonuclear‐research program and the space program, both of which have lent support to many research fields with overlapping interests, such as applied optics, low‐energy‐beam cross‐section measurements and electromagnetic‐wave propagation in ionized media.
