The opening of the new International Center for Theoretical Physics on October 5, 1964, in Trieste, Italy, also marked the commencement of the first of its activities—a four‐week Seminar on Plasma Physics. In an attempt to be true to the principles upon which the center was founded, the seminar was designed to serve three purposes: (a) to introduce the subject of plasma physics to students, primarily those from developing and scientifically isolated countries who, while scientifically skilled, lacked any specialized experience in the field; (b) to expose new researchers in the field to the outstanding problems and the techniques proposed for their solution; and (c) provide a meeting ground for colloquy among experts in order to test new and sometimes tentative approaches.
