The 1963 Space Science Award of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics has been awarded to Herbert Friedman of the Naval Research Laboratory. The medal and $1000 honorarium were presented to Dr. Friedman for his contributions in investigating the physics of planetary atmospheres, beginning with his use of satellites and rockets to study the ultraviolet and x‐radiation of the sun, and the resultant discoveries of their effects on the production of various ionospheric regions.
