Sponsored by the International Union for Pure and Applied Physics, the United States Atomic Energy Commission, and Associated Universities, Inc., an International Conference on High‐Energy Accelerators was held from September 6 to 12, 1961, with the Brookhaven National Laboratory serving as the host organization. The first part of the conference took place at the Barbizon‐Plaza Hotel in New York City; then, over the weekend, all the participants were moved out to Long Island to the Brookhaven Laboratory for the remaining sessions. Almost all the delegates remained for the day after the conference was officially over to share in the celebrations connected with the dedication of Brookhaven's 33‐Bev Alternating‐Gradient Synchrotron.
