Evacuees are returning to homes in Fukushima

10 September 2015

Japan Times: Residents who were evacuated from Fukushima Prefecture following the tsunami and disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in March 2011 are now being allowed to return home. The Japanese government says that radiation levels have fallen enough in some areas of the prefecture to allow for the return. Tamura and parts of Kawauchi have already been resettled, and last week three more areas—Minamisoma, Kawamata, and Katsurao—were opened for return. Those areas account for 14 255 residents,  1308 of whom have returned home. In November, after evaluating the health of the returnees, the government will make a decision as to whether residents will be allowed to remain, and by spring it will decide whether to lift the regional evacuation orders in those areas completely.
