Ars Technica: Google has acquired Titan Aerospace, a company that builds solar-powered drones that can stay aloft for up to five years. Titan had been in the process of developing commercial internet delivery for areas without telephone wires or cellphone towers. Titan will be joining Google’s Project Loon, which is also attempting to deliver localized internet access, but by balloon, not airplane. It is likely that Google Maps and Google Earth may benefit from the acquisition as well, because both depend on quickly updated aerial photography. Another Google project that might be affected by the purchase is Makani, which is developing tethered airborne wind turbines.
