Chemistry in laser material processing

Chemical processes are rarely understood and taken into account in laser materials processing. Consequently, these are not always utilized to the benefit of the process.

Laser cutting and welding has been examined using high-speed film technique and chemical analysis to visualize and improve basic understanding of the enclosed chemical processes at the material site. It has been shown that chemical reactions play a decisive role in laser cutting and welding of steel and aluminum.
