A new combustion analysis system, comprised of an image converter camera and an image processing device, has been developed, in which the flame configuration inside the spark ignition engine combustion chamber can be photographed at real-time and a high-speed of 10,000 fps. The system, applied to a mass-produced, 4-valve passenger car engine, with the results being reproduced in a pseudo-color motion picture image stored on an optical disc, proved to be helpful in monitoring the combustion phenomenon.
