This paper summarizes a new DARPA initiative in optical processing. Called Clutter Rejection Optical Pre-Processing (CROPP), the program will investigate the use of both linear and nonlinear optical processing technology to decrease the clutter in imaging systems while the information is still in the optical state. This paper discusses the background and philosophy of CROPP, and some of the considerations that are being weighed in the current study to define the CROPP program.
