Grass Valley Group has been manufacturing video fiber optic systems since the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid. To date all systems have been Light Emitting Diode (LED)based with a recommended maximum distance of 3 kilometers. At these distances such systems typically make sense where immunity from Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) or Radio Frequency (R.F.) is needed. Ease of cable installation is a consideration. On a price/cost comparison however, such systems are not cost effective until approximately 1 kilometer. In addition, the further the distance the greater the cost benefit. Increased transmission distance has therefore been an ongoing requirement from our customers.
