This paper is intended as a review of the use of electro-optics in production plants. It includes a discussion of recent developments in the field, particularly “machine vision” which has resulted in the proliferation of its use. It surveys some of the techniques used to measure, inspect and control by way of electro-optics. A discussion of techniques which allow optics to perform properly in severe environments is included. Several examples of actual applications are used as illustrations.
