Laser safety training is required by the ANSI Z136.1 Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers for all users of Class 3b and Class 4 lasers. OSHA requires that workers be instructed in the potential hazards and safe use of equipment in the workplace. The level and extent of training required is a function of the specific laser, the application, and the qualifications of the worker. Additionally, the number and variety of lasers and applications within the facility can affect the choice of training format.

This paper describes the topical content of several types of training programs and formats. Considered will be classical classroom programs with instructor, video presentation to individuals or groups, video self study and computer assisted instruction incorporating video disk or CD media. Advantages and disadvantages of the various programs are discussed.
