The cornerstone of any laser safety program, whether in a research lab, medical facility, or manufacturing environment, is the American National Standards Institute publication, ANSI Z136.1, “Safe Use of Lasers.” The newest revision of this standard, due to be released in 2023 will contain updates and changes to reflect the current state-of-the-art view of laser safety. With this revision, now might be a good opportunity to review your program. This presentation will discuss the development and implementation of a laser safety program and the duties and responsibilities of the Laser Safety Officer (LSO), a role that is vital to the success of any laser safety program. The volume of program elements may feel overwhelming, but with a systematic approach, your program can be complying in record time.
