A new laser sheet metal forming technique--laser compound forming (LCF) is proposed. It combines the advantages of the laser thermal-stress forming (LTF) and laser peen forming (LPF). Process design of LCF is presented firstly in the paper. Then, numerical simulations based on FEM are mainly performed to investigate the process of LCF. An appropriate finite element analyzing model for LCF was established with ABAQUS code. Some key problems about the simulation of LCF are investigated in detail, and the reasonable solutions are presented. Taking AISI-1008 steel as an example, numerical simulation of laser compound forming for V-shape is carried out to study the deformation and distribution of residual stress of the sheet metal by using Fully Coupled Thermal-Stress Analysis technique, and then some complex contour forming process by using LCF are also simulated. At last, the corresponding experiments of LCF were performed to validate the simulation results. Good correlation between the numerical simulation and the experimental results was demonstrated.
