Because of increased radiation power and similar hazards, LEDs had been included into international Laser Safety Standards (IEC 825-1): the safety philosophy - developed for point sources - has been transferred to intermediate sources, which are often made for intentional viewing (visible LEDs). The result is an overestimation of the real risk of this kind of sources. In order to solve these problems, a working group was founded to prepare specific parts of the IEC 825-series with particular application-related requirements. The starting points for actions and the basic safety requirements for these parts are presented.
