An ANSI Zl36 sub committee has been formed to create a standard for the safe use of lasers outdoors — the sixth in a series of standards for the safe use of lasers. The standard is intended to address unique product performance requirements of Class 3b and Class 4lasers used outdoors. In addition, hazardous reactions to bright light, and distraction from critical tasks by the beams from visible lasers used at night, are addressed. Specific industries affected by the standard are laser lightshow companies, research lasers used in astronomy, airline pilots, and laser use by the military.
